- WORMS2 MULTIPLAYER/INTERNET DEMO README (C) 1997 TEAM17 SOFTWARE LIMITED
- _____________________________________________________________________________
-
- DEMO RELEASE 2.0: (Feb 1998)
- Please note that this demo contains non-final code and may be subject to
- minor performance problems. Check the Worms2 website for more information.
- _____________________________________________________________________________
-
- *IMPORTANT*
- Worms2 is designed to run exclusively under Windows95 and you should ensure
- that you have Microsoft DirectX 5 installed on your system. The Worms2
- Internet Demo is supplied with the very latest revision of DirectPlay 5.0a
- (part of the DirectX applications suite) for Windows95. The full version of
- DirectX 5 is available for download through links via the Team17 Website.
-
- **VERY IMPORTANT**
- If you wish to play the game over the Internet, you MUST use the Directplay
- 5.0a patch supplied with this demo to upgrade your current version. This will
- give a greater level of stability to your Internet games. While in some cases
- it may be possible to commence Internet games of the Worms2 demo under the
- WindowsNT4.0 operating system we do not however recommend it.
-
- Please read GUIDE.TXT for a more detailed outline of the game and involved
- control methods. Worms2 is far from simple (despite appearances) and it takes
- a significant time to master completely.
-

- EPILEPSY WARNING
- _____________________________________________________________________________
-
- Computer monitors usually display at a sufficient high frequency so that in
- most situations they do not induce any seizures from onscreen images, even
- with individuals already diagnosed as having photosensitive epilepsy. However
- there are very rare extreme cases of people having been susceptible to high
- flash frequencies (flashing lights or patterns) even though they have not
- been previously diagnosed as having epilepsy. This can sometimes result in
- the form of an epileptic seizure or even a loss of consciousness.
-
- In the interests of your health and safety if you do have any form of
- epilepsy please consult a physician prior to playing. Similarly this is also
- advised if a member of your family suffers from epilepsy. During play if you
- are experiencing dizziness, headache, muscle or eye spasms, vision problems,
- disorientation or any ill effects whatsoever discontinue play immediately.
-
- When playing Worms2 we therefore recommend the following steps to minimise
- any possible risk.
-
- ╖ Do not play for prolonged periods, especially when suffering from
- tiredness or sleep deprivation.
- ╖ Make sure that the room you are playing in is well lit, preferably with an
- ordinary light rather than from a fluorescent tube.
- ╖ Have regular break intervals between play sessions, preferably 10 to 15
- minutes every hour.
- ╖ Do not situate yourself too close to the screen.
-
- _____________________________________________________________________________
- ACHIEVING OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE FROM THE DEMO
- _____________________________________________________________________________
-
- As with the majority of other games that run under Windows operating system,
- you should ensure that you have the maximum amount of system resources
- available.
-
- There are several ways in which you can maximise this;
-
- ╖ Run Worms2 Demo directly after initialising your system.
- ╖ Use a video card that has more than 2Mb of memory.
- ╖ Set your Windows desktop at a lower resolution and colour depth. The
- minimum requirement is 256 colours at 640x480 resolution.
- ╖ Set your Windows system fonts to small as you may experience menu display
- formatting problems with large or custom based fonts.
- ╖ Ensure that your hard-drive has enough free space should Windows need it
- to create virtual memory.
- ╖ Ensure that you are using the appropriate certified DirectX drivers for
- your video and sound card.
- ╖ Play Worms at a lower graphic detail level.
- ╖ Do not install and run the game in compressed partitions if at all
- possible.
- ╖ Do not run the game in unison with background applications resident.
- Problems may occur especially with software that puts high demand on
- system resources or has scheduling options such as disk scanners, disk
- defragmenters or virus checkers.
- ╖ Do not minimise or task-switch during play; quit out of the game should
- you require access to the full resources available on your system. Worms2
- is not designed to run at the same time as other major Windows titles and
- applications. Continually minimising and task-switching between Worms2
- and other applications may lead to system problems due to the amount of
- resources required by Worms2.
-

- GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING
- _____________________________________________________________________________
-
- Microsoft DirectX 5
- DirectX 5 from Microsoft is basically a program interface for creating and
- managing graphic images and multimedia effects in games such as Worms2 and is
- required for the game to run correctly. DirectDraw and DirectSound
- (components of DirectX) are utilised by Worms2 to handle video display and
- sound output respectively. If you encounter any video or sound related
- problems with your game then please confirm initially that you are using the
- very latest available drivers for your display or audio device to ensure
- complete compatibility. Please refer to the DXInfo and Windows 95 detailing
- later in this section for information on how to achieve this.
-
- *Please note that due to DirectX requirements to run Worms2 under Windows
- NT4.0 you must have Service Pack 3 installed.
-
- DirectX Installation
- DirectX is an extension to your existing operating system and is produced by
- Microsoft Corporation and is not a product of Team17 Software Ltd. During
- initial installation or an update of DirectX it may possibly affect the
- workings of other programs or hardware components you have within your
- system. This is in no way linked to Worms2 but can be known to occur after
- DirectX install completes certain hardware driver updates. If you do
- encounter any problems after a DirectX installation please refer to the
- Microsoft Corporation website at www.microsoft.com for further details.
-
- Worms2 Internet Demo is supplied with the very latest revision of Microsoft
- DirectPlay 5.0a for Windows 95. You MUST install DirectX 5 prior to
- installing this demo. Please remember to restart your computer after the
- DirectX installation so all changes that have been made will take effect.
-
- DXInfo and Windows 95
- This utility which is part of DirectX 5 will enable you to establish the
- individual hardware components of your computer system in order to verify
- their compatibility. If any of your components are non-compliant please
- contact your hardware manufacturer in the first instance for possible
- software driver updates.
-
- Please note that you will be unable to establish DirectX components in this
- way under Windows NT4.0.
-
- ╖ From Windows 95 desktop open the folder labelled MY COMPUTER.
- ╖ Open the folder for your primary hard drive C:\.
- ╖ Open the PROGRAM FILES \ DIRECTX \ SETUP subfolder.
- ╖ Locate the icon labelled DXInfo and double-click on it with the left
- mouse button.
- ╖ After DXInfo has evaluated your system you will see a text box detailing
- your system information.
- ╖ Locate the gadget SAVE CONFIG INFO and click on it to save this info as a
- text file (you will be prompted for a name to assign to this file and a
- destination folder).
- ╖ View the file using the Notepad program located within your Windows
- START BAR \ PROGRAMS \ ACCESSORIES submenu.
- ╖ In the DXInfo text file the Display section indicates the version and date
- of your videocard drivers. If these indicate FINAL RETAIL and CERTIFIED
- respectively then your videocard is DirectX compliant.
- ╖ In the DXInfo text file the Sound section indicates the version and date of
- your soundcard drivers. If these indicate FINAL RETAIL and CERTIFIED
- respectively then your soundcard is DirectX compliant.
- ╖ If your components are compliant and you are still experiencing problems it
- is most probable that the problem is not DirectX related. Please contact us
- for further advice in this case.
-
- DirectDraw
- The DirectDraw component of DirectX controls how graphics are displayed in
- Worms2. Please find a collection of known problems listed below.
-
- Matrox Millenium videocards and DirectDraw
- There is a performance problem with some revisions of the Matrox drivers that
- will be seen as a dramatic slowdown during play. In order to fix this problem
- select one of the other MGA drivers that are supplied with Windows. Otherwise
- it is highly likely that you will require a driver update. For further
- details on this please visit their Website at www.matrox.com or alternatively
- contact your hardware vendor.
-
- Cirrus Logic based videocards and DirectDraw
- If you are experiencing video problems with your Cirrus Logic based card
- there is a possibility that the chipset or bios of the card is not fully
- compliant with DirectDraw. For further details on this please visit their
- Website at www.cirrus.com or alternatively contact your hardware vendor.
-
- DirectSound
- The DirectSound component of DirectX controls how sound is played in Worms2.
- Please find a collection of known problems listed below.
-
- Aztech Sound Galaxy Washington 16 and DirectSound
- If you are experiencing audio problems with this soundcard there is a
- possibility that the software drivers for the card are not fully compliant
- with DirectSound. It is highly likely that you will require a driver update.
- For further details on this please visit their website at www.aztechca.com
- or alternatively contact your hardware vendor.
-
- Gravis Ultrasound Extreme and DirectSound
- The Gravis Ultrasound Extreme and other cards based around ESS chipset
- architecture have known performance problems.
-
- Creative Labs SoundBlaster AWE64
- If you are experiencing problems, we recommend that the reverb option on your
- card is switched off.
-
- _____________________________________________________________________________
- NETWORK TROUBLESHOOTING
- _____________________________________________________________________________
-
- General Information
-
- ╖ This demo supports connection under the TCP/IP protocol only.
- ╖ If you encounter any network problems whatsoever, please establish that you
- actually have a viable connection under the TCP/IP protocol. We have listed
- basic details on possible causes and solutions under each protocol later in
- this section. However, if you are in any doubt at all on the reliability of
- your connection, please contact your network administrator or ISP for
- assistance.
- ╖ If you are experiencing problems with connection, it is possible that your
- network could include devices such as switches, routers, bridges or
- firewalls within its structure. In this instance, you should contact your
- network administrator for a viable solution. Please note that these network
- structures may not affect the TCP/IP protocol 'ping' command, but they may
- prevent a connection under DirectPlay and this is a required resource for
- Internet play.
- ╖ Ensure that the Host machine for network play has the highest specification
- and the fastest available network connection. Since the Host machine
- manages information for the Client players, you may experience possible
- slowdown or unacceptable game framerate if this is not followed.
- ╖ If you are experiencing slowdown or unacceptable game framerate with a
- large amount of spectators, please reduce the level of entrants to the
- game accordingly.
- ╖ Although Worms2 will play via modem at less than 2400 bps, we recommend
- that your modem be set to the highest available speed for maximum
- performance.
- ╖ The demo will only connect to the West Coast US Worms2 server.
- ╖ Worms2 incorporates a system that will time out if a network connection
- cannot actually be established. Upon initial Internet game startup Worms2
- will wait 120 seconds but will disconnect automatically if a connection
- cannot be established. If an ingame connection is no longer viable Worms2
- will time out after approximately 60 seconds.
- ╖ The ingame chat menu also incorporates a text colour key system for the
- network connection status of each individual machine. Please find a list
- of these detailed below:
-
- BLUE indicates that a machine connection is still being established.
- WHITE indicates that a machine connection has been established.
- RED indicates that a machine connection has been lost temporarily.
- GREY indicates that a machine has disconnected.
-
- Winsock and AOL
- If you are using AOL as your online service you may need to upgrade your
- existing software to the AOL3.0 revision. This is currently available for
- download at http://www.aol.com. Worms2 requires the 32bit version of the
- winsock application for network play under the TCP/IP protocol. Please note
- that versions previous to AOL.3.0 are 16bit only and will exhibit network
- game problems in this particular case.
-
- TCP/IP Protocol Internet Connection
- You need a TCP/IP connection (and a valid IP address, dynamic or fixed)
- to play via the Internet and to connect to the Worms2 game server. Server
- chat is supported only in rooms and not in the initial lobby.
-
- TCP/IP Protocol Connection Problems
- If you are experiencing problems with connection, please find a few possible
- solutions below to alleviate your problem. Please note that if you are
- connecting via the Internet, some online services such as America Online
- or CompuServe may automatically have become inactive if you have not
- accessed them for a given period. If you cannot obtain an Internet
- connection at all, then contact your network administrator or ISP for a
- viable solution.
-
- Ping Command
- This basic command will allow you to establish if your IP address and other
- IP addresses are currently active and working. From the Windows Start
- button, select 'Run' and in the text box type:
-
- ping 127.0.0.1
-
- When selecting 'OK,' a window should be displayed. If you receive a reply,
- you have successfully looped a message from and then back to your machine.
- However, if you receive a message such as 'Destination host unreachable,'
- then your TCP/IP configuration is incorrect.
-
- After establishing that your own TCP/IP configuration is correct, you need
- to find out if you can connect to other IP addresses. From the Windows
- Start button, select 'Run' and in the text box now type:
-
- ping 195.92.16.10
-
- Then, as before, if you have received a reply, you have just successfully
- sent a message to and from the Team17 Web Server. The majority of networked
- machines are actually addressed in name form. To verify that your TCP/IP
- configuration supports name resolving from the Windows Start button, select
- 'Run' and in the text box type:
-
- ping www.team17.com
-
- Winipcfg Command
- In Worms2 your IP address can be obtained from within the network screen
- under your connected machine name. However, on some systems (especially if
- you have two possible Internet connection methods such as a network card
- and a dial-up adapter), you will have to use the Winipcfg command to
- establish your active IP address. From the Windows Start button, select
- Run' and in the text box now type:
-
- winipcfg
-
- When selecting 'OK,' a window should be displayed. This contains all the
- information relating to your IP configuration including your active IP
- address.
